Think about how you searched for goods or services on the web prior to the recession. Now think about how you would do the same search today. If you are like most people then in today’s economic climate, you are using terms like “sale”, “cheap”, and “discount” far more than you were a couple of years ago. In search marketing, it is imperative to ensure that your search campaigns incorporate these conditions into the keywords that you target. For example, if you offer a service in your area, you might want rethink the strategy of going after terms like “best” and change it to something that applies to a value related term.

Beyond just changing your paid and organic search terms, it is also very wise to employ the same strategy throughout your website. Let your customers know what your unique value offer is and how you are doing whatever you can to help them through these tough times. A little sympathy goes a long way, especially when you mean it. After making the updates be sure to monitor the results of the new strategy to ensure that the new campaign is outperforming the old one. If you see a decrease in your conversion rate, then rethink the messaging. You can push the low cost angle too far, which can cause the customer to feel that your product is inferior to your competitors. If this happens, make the proper adjustments and try again!

I say why not? 99.999% of small businesses do not have the same online credibility as does craigslist. If your service or product is the kind that has traditionally been driven by classified ads, then you would be a fool not to use craigslist as a tool. Lawncare, animal breeders, and many other small businesses that have typically lived off of newspaper classifieds have seen there business go down significantly. The one thing that most of these people haven’t realized is that a whole lot of people know go to the online classifieds for their information instead of newspapers.

History of Craigslist

Craigslist started in 1995 as a emails about events in San Francisco and was started by Craig Newmark. Since 1995, Craigslist has expanded into 50 countries and has listings in over 570 cities. The success of the website directly relates to it’s policy of serving free listings (Now job postings do cost some money, but far less than any of the major online job portals). I guess we could say that Craigslist is the “Open Source Classifieds”.

How to Utilize Craigslist for Your Business

With the ability to list three unique ads per day, that are given the red carpet by search engines, Craigslist allows small players that don’t even have a website the ability to have their businesses ranked on the first page of results for certain relevant phrases. The key to a successful listing is to utilize the architecture of the site. The keys to success with Craigslist are:

  • Ensure that your listing is under the proper category
  • Using keywords that are relevant to your business in your headline
  • Make sure that your product or service is legit and that your offer is community centric
  • Be upfront about your business. Craigslist is constantly spammed, so transparency is a must.

If you follow these suggestions and are diligent with your efforts, you will be pleasantly surprised with how successful Craigslist can be for your company.

Google maps listings showing up on the first page of search results has been around for some time now, but as with all technologies, it has extended it’s reach to now include non-local search phrases that Google assumes are local in purpose. Example: Now, if Google has placed me in Nashville, TN by my IP address and I search for the generic terms “restaurants”, I see the Google Maps 10-pack near the top of my results. Did I specify that I wanted to see local results? No. Could it be assumed that 90% of the population would find this information to be useful? More than likely.

Who Does It Help?

This update helps out the little man. If you are a one location, brick and mortar store, then (more than likely, there are exceptions) the only way that a visitor would ever see your company on the front page of a highly competitive keyword would be through PPC. Now, as long as you have properly optimized your Google Local listing, you have a shot of getting free traffic from the first page of results.

The people who are going to feel the most pain from this change are the portals and ad revenue dependent sites that have spent years developing enough great content (not to mention the massive amounts of SEO work) necessary to be in the top five SERP’s for these keywords. If these players ranked #4 like Zappo’s is showing on my results for “shoe store”, congratulations to the awesome world of below the fold and significantly less revenue from that phrase.

As bad as I do feel for companies who have spent years developing businesses off of generic keywords, the fact is that most of the time, the searchers were probably looking for a local company when they found your site. Until fairly recently, most search engine users didn’t understand how the engines worked and didn’t have enough experience to know how to get more relevant results on their own. You guys gamed the system and at the end of the day, the local businesses whose business has suffered at the hands of the internet employ more people as a whole, making this pretty good for the economy. I guess it is time to re-optimize a whole lot of Google Local listings!

Well, it looks like all of those small companies that worked their asses off to earn the top SERPS for highly competitive keywords have been devastated by Google’s newest “update” to the algo. Aaron Wall at SEO Book created a great post about the new heavy emphasis on branding from Google. It seems that now you can “buy relevancy”. For once, the SEO community is not overreacting to subtle changes in the SEROS, because Matt Cutts has addressed this newest incarnation in the algorithm (see the video below).

What Does This All Mean

Well, if you have been competing on highly competitive, generic keyword phrases, then you are going to lose a lot of revenue from search engine traffic (unless you are a household name). So it seems that paid links are prohibited by Google Spam Team law, but having a 9 figure marketing budget is the new “SEO trick of the day.” This isn’t good news for small players that have developed a great niche on the web. There is one caveat to the new change: Most long-tail keywords are not going to be effected by this change. Local search you ask? In the clear.

The fact of the matter is that most of the generic phrases that this change applies to tend to have a low conversion rate for most sites. These companies need to understand that their long-tail keyword visitors are much more likely to convert that these visitors that are typically at the top of the sales funnel. Will it affect the bottom line? Yes. There are always people that become aware of your company from very broad keywords and come back later to convert. Anyone that is feeling the pain from this blow needs to take a step back, take a deep breath, and then needs to establish a plan of action to regain their revenue using the same skills that pushed them past the big dogs the first time. If any of you guys need help developing a new strategy, LSM is here to help.

SEO is a lot like football, with major rule changes against you every few months. If you don’t follow me on this note, then let me explain.

SEO in the Mid 1990’s

Imagine that you are an offensive coordinator for a NFL team. Now consider that you are playing against a 11 on 3.

This was SEO back in the mid ’90’s. Come to think of it, the industry also parallels with the video games of the same era. Remember finding that one play that the computer couldn’t stop? You know the one that you felt bad about using, until you had to get the first down? Well, in SEO at this point in time the equivalent was just stuffing keywords into your copy. If you were ahead of the herd, you just cloaked your keywords at the bottom of the page because the search engines hadn’t quite figured out the keyword saturation/content relevance portion of the algorithm yet.

The Late 1990’s

So one day you were looking down the field and suddenly the defense has 7.

You ask yourself why in the hell do links matter? After going through the acceptance stage about links now being a part of your life, you find the loophole. You do some research and find hundreds of equally frustrated webmasters. With your combined power, you guys learn that all you need to do is fire off as many remote sites as possible and link to your new friends, with them returning the favor. Now, you have your SERPS back!

The Early 2000’s

Well, it looks like the sides are equaled up at 11 to 11. Good luck coach.

So you are trying to tell me that my 56,000 links don’t mean anything! What is link relevancy and who do these “google kids” think that they are? You spend hours and hours finding people within your niche with who to trade links. If you were a hard worker, you created an industry directory. You submitted your site to every possible directory out there. Finally, you have regained your SERPS. The future of SEO has came to you in a dream…

The Mid 2000’s

What happened to a fair game! How can my 11 man offense compete against a team of 25 defensive players!

Yeah, you knew that the user agreements for the search engines preached about quality content. I found holes in the algorithms over the years that the search engines didn’t compensate for very quickly. Know the anti-spam teams have destroyed all of my old techniques. It looks like my opposition has finally outworked me and know what my next moves maybe. You go through your website and remove any questionable elements. You scrub your links and get rid of the trash. I create some unique content and scrap even more. I am back up in the SERPS again!

‘07 Through Today

Great. Have you ever been a quarterback and tried to read a secondary with 50 DB’s!

The Take Away

In today’s SEO landscape, we have even more obstacles and challenges to deal with now more than ever. From universal search to unique content overtaking high PR links in the algorithm, the game is now more difficult than ever. The fact of the matter is that had early webmasters looked ahead at the landscape in front of their faces, they would own the market. The “short term investor” mentality of trying to beat the system has not only made people like Matt Cutts famous in certain circles, but has also created an economic crisis in America. The quick, easy, and short road may work well for some, but for the vast majority of the population, doing things the right way will pay off in the end.

To End This on the Words of a Wiser Man Than Me:

“I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for five years.”

Why Use Search Marketing in a Recession

Let’s face it. We are in a recession and it is affecting almost every one’s business. I personally feel that luxury medical procedures are a great sign of the health of the economy, so I used Google Trends to see how search volume has been affected for a couple of luxury medical procedures and then for chapter 7. This is what I learned:

*Please keep in mind: According to comScore 2008 witnessed a 21% increase in total search volume across the top 5 search engines

Elective Medical Procedures Researched:

Here is the relative search volume for the phrase "breast augmentation"

Relative search volume for the phrase "breast augmentation"

Here is the relative search volume for the keyword "lasik"

Here is the relative search volume for the keyword "lasik"

As we can see, the decline for these procedures has declined at an alarming rate for anyone in either of these industries. Can some of the blame be allocated to factors other than the economy? Probably, but can we also assume that teh exponential decrease in search volume in the past 12 months can be associated to the recession, you be the judge.

Now, let us look at the results from “chapter 7″:

Here is the relative search volume for the phrase "chapter 7"

Here is the relative search volume for the phrase "chapter 7"

For those who don’t know, chapter 7 is the most common form of bankruptcy in the U.S. and I am willing to say that the increase in search volume for this term can be directly correlated to the economy.

Why Focus On Search Marketing Now?

If you are seeing an overall decrease in demand for your product or service, good luck trying to drive demand through traditional marketing channels. You could take advantage of the decreased rates being offered by publishers and other people with ad space that they can’t sell, which “could” have its benefits when the economy recovers, but that really doesn’t help you to bring in customers now.

Search marketing gives you the opportunity to reach out to the most important consumers in your market right now, the people that are actively researching what you offer. With the proverbial pie of possible customers shrinking, consumers that are near the bottom of the sales funnel are even more valuable now than ever. People are searching for your company’s product or service and the company’s that own the search engines for these terms have a serious advantage over the competition.  Is your company willing to leverage search marketing or are you willing to lose market share?

Think You Can’t be a Web Analyst? Think Again!

If you believe that you can only manage what you can measure, then using a traffic analysis tool is the key to a successful online marketing effort. With the proper effort, a tool like Google Analytics can tell you endless amounts of information on visitors to your website. Custom segments give you the ability to break down and translate general information about visitors to your site into actionable metrics.

For instance, would you like to know if a first time visitor to your site is more likely to convert than a repeat visitor? Would you like to know which online marketing medium garners the lowest cost per new customer acquisition? How about what geographic location is costing the most in PPC spending per lead? I think you get the point. Fortunately, Google has given the analytics newbie a very powerful tool: Advanced Segments.

Once upon a time, creating segments in Google Analytics took some technical know how, but the team at GA has given users of all knowledge levels access to creating custom segments. For starters, there are eight default segments built into Advanced Segments. So lets say that you need a segment that isn’t listed. No problem! Just click on “Create a new custom segment”, use the drag and drop interface to choose the metrics that you would like to see, and you have officially climbed one step higher on the web analyst ability ladder.

After spending some time creating custom visitor segments, you will have insights into the differences in visitor interactions with your website that will translate to higher profit margins.

Should You Add A Blog To Your Website

The short answer is yes. The long answer is you should, but you will maximize the value of adding a blog to your website by incorporating these simple steps:

Dedicate at Least Two Hours a Month to Creating Fresh Content

Creating new, relevant blog posts not only helps increase your percieved credibility on the subject, but can also lead to some long tail traffic down the road for your business. Let me explain:

Search engines crawl sites that consistently put up unique, fresh content more frequently. This is self-explanatory. The Googlebot is actually two unique bots with different goals. Deepbot tries to find new pages for the index and Freshbot is dedicated to finding websites that consistently update their content. Freshbot can only search so much of the internet every time it is run, so it makes sense for the Freshbot to make it a point to spend it’s time wisely. In this instance, why would bot waste any of it’s limited time crawling sites that haven’t been updated in the last 12 months, when it could focus more on sites that consistently put up new content?

Gaining Long-Tail Traffic To Your Website

If you think like I do, then you place a certain dollar amount to every hour that you spend working. You can justify the ROI on the time that you devote to blogging by seeing visitor’s convert on your website through your blog posts and here is how:

Use programs like Wordtracker or Google’s keyword tool to find the keywords that relate to your business that people are searching for and find phrases (yes phrases, odds are you won’t be number 1 for “tv’s” in this lifetime) that you can write a blog post about using your expertise on the subject. For instance, if you are a cosmetic dentist, write a blog post about the “most effective teeth whitening techniques” and use different variations of that phrase throughout the post. After a week or so, google the phrase to see where you are ranking for the phrase and use your web analytics package to see if you are getting traffic from these keywords.

*Note: If you are not currently using a decent web analytics package (hitcounters do not count), then contact me immediately!!!

Use It As a FAQ’s Section On Steroids!

If your customers consistently ask the same questions, then write blog posts that answer all aspects of the subject matter at hand. That builds trust and confidence in you and your business. Also, if they are asking you these questions, then odds are: They are searching for these phrases as well (Refer to the previous section)!

OK, so I have to help get this list from David Leonhardt at the Seo-Writer blog circulating around. I think that I actually laughed out loud at his Redneck SEO post. My favorites have to be numbers 15 and 38. This is a great parody on the old Jeff Foxworthy “You might be a redneck jokes. Check this one out and enjoy.

Google.com has a pagerank of 10. So do 41 other google pages. Now, if I remember correctly, isn’t content a factor in pagerank? Now here is the real irony, yahoo.com (which has plenty of content) only has a pagerankof 9. Here is another killer, we all know how much google loves Wikipedia and they only recieved a 9.

So How Can I Get A PageRank of 10?

So how can someone else garner a pagerank of 10, you ask? Easy! Just have your domain as adobe.com (49 pages), apple.com (21 pages), or by being one of the very lucky 9 .gov’s and you too can have a pagerank of 10.

I am officially declaring shenanigans on google. I know that the google toolbar doesn’t give us the “real” pagerank, but could you please at least show us some humility by giving yourself a pagerank of 1?

Oh, and as a closer, lets look at my gmail ad relevancy from earlier today:

On a scale of 1-10, I am going to give that ad a relevancy score of negative zero.
